Buffy the Vampire Slayer star Sarah Michelle Gellar has paid tribute to Buffy Summers as her character turns 40.

Yep, in a milestone that makes us feel insanely old, everyone's favourite slayer hit four decades yesterday (January 19) – something that came as news to the actress.

Paying tribute to Buffy on Instagram, Gellar praised the character and how she "taught that the hardest thing in the world is to live in it".

"I just realized that today is Buffy Summers 40 bday," she began. "I can't even believe that. She taught that the the hardest thing in the world is to live in it. So in her honor let's all be brave. Live.

"This may not be the way we are used to living our lives, but let's find the beauty. So we can all live long and safely. #happybirthdaybuffy #buffy40".

While Buffy is sadly off our screens, the show is due to get a "richly diverse" reboot – something that has been in the pipeline for a number of years, mind.

Speaking to Digital Spy last year about her reaction to the fact that the show will be coming back, Tara Maclay actress Amber Benson said she was "so excited", especially with a woman of colour running the show and Buffy being a woman of colour.

"So Buffy – it had some diversity," she said. "But I feel like it could have had more. And that was just the time. That sort of onus wasn't on the creative world to show the world in a diverse way.

"I would very much like to see Buffy in a diverse world. I think it would be a really amazing thing."
