A central Coventry building could be extended and converted into flats. Plans that would see an extra storey added to 50-64 Corporation Street have been lodged with the council.

The three-storey block is currently home to a cafe and hair salon on its ground and first floors, and artists workspaces on its second floor. Most of the building would be turned into 15 apartments under the move.

Its ground floor would stay as space for businesses with two units available. The block would also get new cladding, insulation and access onto Corporation Street, according to planning documents.

The flats would not have new residential parking bays but there would be spaces for bicycles. The building would have 12 one-bed apartments and 3 two-bed apartments, designs show.

A statement with plans claimed the move would convert an "underused" city centre building into "much-needed quality housing." The scheme will contribute to the area's regeneration and improve the building's "tired appearance," it added.

A heritage document also said the plans had taken its historic surroundings into account. It concluded: "The proposals have taken account of the heritage assets in the area and it is concluded that the impact on these is less than substantial harm to both the conservation area and the locally listed Philip Larkin public house."
