CBS bosses have defended a decision to bring Michael Weatherly back for season 4 of the US drama TV series Bull.

Sexual harassment allegations were made against Weatherly by Buffy the Vampire Slayer star Eliza Dushku – but a fourth season of the CBS drama was always planned.

"Michael made a mistake," CBS’ entertainment president Kelly Kahl told TVLine on Wednesday (May 15).

“He owned that mistake… he was apologetic at the time; he was remorseful… [Michael made himself open to] whatever coaching or training is necessary to create a positive environment on set. He took everything very seriously and wanted to move forward."

Kahl continued: "When we looked at the totality of the situation, we felt comfortable bringing it back on the air."

Weatherly responded to Dushku's claims last year and said he was "mortified to have offended her".

He said in a statement: "During the course of taping our show, I made some jokes mocking some lines in the script.

"When Eliza told me that she wasn’t comfortable with my language and attempt at humour, I was mortified to have offended her and immediately apologised. After reflecting on this further, I better understand that what I said was both not funny and not appropriate and I am sorry and regret the pain this caused Eliza."

Soon after the show's renewal for a fourth season, Steven Spielberg quit as executive producer over the on-set issues.

Kahl has also detailed new processes in place to ensure better work environments across all CBS shows and sets. “However things were handled in the past, they are not being handled that way now,” he maintained. “There is no room to sweep anything under the rug.”

Dushku was awarded $9.5 million by CBS as a result, following claims she was written out of the series after confronting her co-star over inappropriate behaviour.

CBS is yet to announce an air date for Bull's fourth season.
