They used a special piece of equipment called the "Insta-Broiler," which was capable of cooking several burgers quickly, giving the restaurant a unique edge. In 1954, Miami-based franchisees James McLamore and David Edgerton purchased the company and renamed it Burger King.

They also ditched the Insta-Broiler for a new flame-broiling machine they developed themselves. This method of flame-grilling became a signature cooking style for the company. One of the most iconic moments in Burger King’s history was the introduction of the Whopper in 1957 by James McLamore. Priced initially at 37 cents, it became the chain’s signature burger and helped distinguish Burger King from its competition.

Burger King arrived in the UK in 1976, over two decades after its founding in the US The first UK outlet was opened in London, and the brand expanded steadily in the years that followed.
