Two men who were caught on CCTV attempting to break into shops in the shopping centre in Burnley have been put behind bars.

Blackburn Magistrates' Court heard the duo eventually put a brick through the window of Device Care and stole vape products from the display.

Mark Donaldson, 33, of no fixed address and Aaron Jake Salt, 27, also of no fixed address, both pleaded guilty to burglary and theft from Device Care, in Charter Walk Shopping Centre, Burnley, and attempted burglary at Labels, Holland and Barrett and Ernest Jones.

Suzanne Ludlow, prosecuting, said police were alerted by the town centre CCTV monitor at 12.50am that two men were attempting to break into shops.

When they were confronted by a female officer, Donaldson and Salt ran off but they were tracked by the CCTV system and arrested quickly.

The property stolen from Device Care was recovered from them.

Miss Ludlow said the owner of the shop said it was the second time in two weeks his premises had been broken into.

She said as a result of the offence Donaldson had been recalled on prison licence.

Mark Williams, for Donaldson, said the property stolen was of a modest value, however conceded the damage to the window and disruption to the business were more significant.

"He accepts he is going back on prison recall and that leaves you with only one sentencing option," said Mr Williams.

Gareth Price, in mitigation for Salt, said his client had no previous convictions for dishonesty.

"This was essentially two homeless people walking through the town centre and deciding to try and break into several shops," said Mr Price.

Donaldson was jailed for 38 weeks and ordered to pay £150 compensation.

Salt was remanded in custody for the preparation of a pre-sentence report, and will await his court date for sentencing behind bars.
