Tottenham fans were left frustrated after Sunday’s Premier League fixture against Burnley was postponed less than an hour before kick-off at Turf Moor.

Many had made a five-hour journey from London for the 2pm start, while one supporter had travelled from Dallas in America for the match. “Would have loved watching it in these conditions,” wrote @SaxyKeN17 on Twitter, while also posting pictures around the stadium.

Harry Kane later invited the supporter to attend a match at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium following his disappointment. Kane tweeted:

Referee Peter Bankes called the game off because of heavy snowfall.

“The ground staff worked as hard as they could,” he said. “The best thing to do was to call the game off – which we did after speaking to both managers. There was going to be an opportunity to stop the game every 15 minutes, but both managers were in agreement that the spectacle wouldn’t have been very good.”

It meant there was no chance for Antonio Conte’s side to immediately bounce back from their embarrassing 2-1 defeat in the Europa Conference League by NS Mura in Slovenia last Thursday.

Spurs now face a headache over when to replay the match as they have a game in every midweek heading into the hectic Christmas schedule. Their next gap in the fixture list is during January. But Conte insisted it was the right decision to call the match off as players were at risk of injury.

“I think in these conditions it’s not football,” Conte said. “I want to play football, I want to have fun, to play and to give emotion.

“I think in this situation, it’s impossible and there is a serious risk for the players to take an injury.”

Sean Dyche, the Burnley manager, agreed.

“I can’t see how it could go ahead the way the pitch is,” he said.

“It’s a joint decision with everyone. We were ready, and I made it clear if it could be played we wanted it on – as did their manager.”

Welcome to Burnley vs Spurs

Put that ketchup down! It’ll spoil your Sunday lunch. Good afternoon and welcome to our live blog of Tottenham Hotspur’s visit to Burnley, the kick off is at 2pm and this is one of five Premier League matches on a bright, chilly Sunday.

Tottenham, under the gimlet eye of Antonio Conte, begin the day in seventh place, smarting from a humiliating reverse in the Europa Conference League against Slovenian nobodies NS Mura. Humiliating enough to even be in the competition, you might say. He said in the aftermath of that:

"I must be honest and tell you that after three-and-a-half weeks, I am starting to understand the situation. I can tell you that the situation is not simple. It is not simple because in this moment for sure the level of Tottenham is not so high.”

Either an honest assessment, or getting your excuses in first, depending on how you see it. He added:

“There is an important gap to the top teams in England. Of this we must not be scared. I am here to work, here to improve the situation. I know that in this moment we need to have patience, time and I am here because I know there are problems to solve.”

"I am not a magician. After three weeks I have found players that want to work and have great commitment but sometimes it is not enough.”

Here, Telegraph football writer Sam Dean assesses which players Conte might think are not up to scratch. And there are some big names on that list, I’ll tell you what.

His team, problems or otherwise, begin the day in seventh place. Their hosts, Burnley, have got concerns of their own. They begin the day in the relegation places, and they will have to get a result today without three of their better players.

Ashley Barnes has torn a muscle in his thigh, while James Tarkowski and Ashley Westwood are both suspended for getting their fifth booking of the season.

We will find out who Sean Dyche does select, and all the other Burnley vs Tottenham team news at 1pm. Thanks for joining us, and here’s hoping we have an action-packed game.
