Burnley's Premier League clash against Tottenham called off as Turf Moor covered in snow

Burnley's Premier League match against Tottenham Hotspur was called off less than an hour before kick-off because of heavy show.

Pictures show a blanket of white over the Turf Moor pitch - with fresh snow covering the ground almost as quickly as earlier flakes were being cleared.

The stadium's undersoil heating had been on overnight but it was unable to cope with the conditions.

The announcement was made after both clubs had named their teams for the game, which was due to kick-off at 2pm.

Officials waited until both managers were present before making a final decision.

Burnley boss Sean Dyche said he was "disappointed" about the postponement but the ball was "collecting snow".

He added: "The ref said we'd have to keep stopping to clear the lines. And, of course, there is the safety angle. The pitch continues to re-cover every time they clear it."

Tottenham head coach Antonio Conte said: "It's bitterly disappointing, but you can see: 10 minutes ago they tried to cut off the snow, and now it's worse than before."

Referee Peter Bankes said: "Safety is obviously the primary focus for us and both managers were in agreement the spectacle wouldn't be very good, and I think the best decision was to call the whole thing off."

There are no details yet about when the game will be played.
