Bus journeys in Rainham, Gillingham, Chatham, Rochester and Strood to have free weekend next month
Bus journeys from five Kent towns will be totally free for a weekend this month as part of ‘Catch the Bus Month’. Medway Council has announced that all single journeys starting in Medway on Saturday, September 21 and Sunday, September 22 will be completely free of charge.
This means that anyone in Rainham, Gillingham, Chatham, Rochester and Strood, as well as anywhere else in the Medway district, will be able to hop on and ride without a ticket on these days. Free travel will be available until 8pm on each day, after which time normal fares will apply.
All bus operators that serve the Medway towns will be taking part, including Arriva, ASD, Chalkwell, Nu-Venture and Redroute. This will apply to single journeys beginning in the Medway area.

A spokesperson for Medway Council explained: “For example, you can go to Bluewater for a journey starting in Medway, but would need to pay for the return.” This scheme has been funded by the Government as part of the national Bus Service Improvement Plan.
It coincides with the ongoing £2 ticket cap, which applies to all single journeys until December 31 2024, having been extended multiple times as part of an initiative from the Department for Transport for Household Support. In Medway, Arriva and Chalkwell are taking part in the £2 ticket scheme.
