Engineers are to work around-the-clock over the next four weekends as Network Rail renews key pieces of infrastructure on the Highland mainline.

That means that buses will replace trains between Perth and Inverness while the works – which are part of a £9million investment in the railway – take place.

The team of engineers renew or refurbish switches and crossings – moveable sections of track that guide trains from one line to another – at various locations between Blair Atholl and Carrbridge.

Work will also be underway in Killiecrankie, where the Rannoch Road bridge over the railway is being demolished and replaced.

Passengers are being advised that a bus replacement service will be in operation during the weekends from Saturday, November 16, to Sunday, December 8.

Ross Moran, Network Rail Scotland route director, said: “The investment we’re making will help keep services reliable for years to come.

“We understand that there’s never a good time to close the railway, however, these works can only be delivered when trains are not operating on the line.

“We advise everyone planning on travelling on the route during the works to plan ahead and we thank passengers for their patience.”
