Bushfire Lines Glow Eerily at Night as Plane Passes Over Sydney

Bushfires threatened homes on the outskirts of Sydney on December 5 with two major blazes burning on the doorstep of Australia’s largest city.

Emergency warnings were again issued for both the Green Wattle Creek fire, near Oakdale in the city’s southwest, and the giant Gospers Mountain fire, near Colo Heights in the northwest, on Friday, December 6.

The Gospers Mountain fire has burned through more than 257,000 hectares of bushland in and around Wollemi National Park by Friday afternoon.

Matt Walker, who filmed this video from a plane on December 5, posted on Instagram that it was “amazing flying into Sydney overnight – the fires were truly massive.”

There were more than 100 fires burning across New South Wales on Friday afternoon and 74 of the blazes were yet to be contained, according to the NSW Rural Fire Service. Credit: Matt Walker via Storyful
