A Derbyshire country road that connects two busy towns has been closed in both directions after a tanker overturned. The A517 at Turnditch, between Ashbourne and Belper, is closed due to the incident, which has caused a spillage of milk.

Heavy traffic has been reported in the area. A statement from Derbyshire police reads: "We were called to report that a lorry had overturned in the A517 Ashbourne Road, Belper, just before 10.20am.

“A road closure remains in place between the Tiger Inn pub and the Railway Inn pub, whilst vehicle recovery is arranged. Please take alternative routes where possible.” Inrix has confirmed that the road is closed from Windley Lane to Hillcliff Lane.

A spokesperson for the traffic monitoring service said: "The A517 is closed in both directions from Windley Lane (Turnditch) to Hillcliff Lane (Cross O' Th' Hands). This is due to an overturned tanker which has caused a spillage of milk in the road.

"The road remains closed while the incident is dealt with and heavy traffic is building in the area." The closure was also confirmed by the AA, which says a rolled-over tanker is causing heavy traffic around Turnditch.
