Busy Eltham road closed and houses evacuated in ‘suspected gas leak'

A busy road in Eltham has been closed with several houses evacuated due to a suspected gas leak.

Yesterday (September 20) at around 5pm police were called to the scene of Well Hall Road.

A number of properties were evacuated whilst emergency services dealt with the incident.

Police have since confirmed that the road was reopened yesterday at around 8pm after being deemed “safe” by engineers.

There were no reported injuries.

Following investigations by London Fire Brigade a gas mains was found to have ruptured.

A spokesperson for Metropolitan Police said: ”Police were called at 16:58hrs on Wednesday, 20 September to reports of a suspected gas leak on Well Hall Road, Eltham.

”No one is believed to have been injured at this time.

”A number of properties have been evacuated while emergency services deal with the incident.”

A spokesperson from London Fire Brigade: "Firefighters attended Well Hall Road in Eltham yesterday following a report of a smell of gas.

"Following investigation, it was discovered that a gas main had ruptured.

"A 100 metre cordon was put in place and a number of properties were evacuated as a precaution. The scene was left in the care of the gas authority.

"The Brigade was called at 1605 and the incident was over for firefighters by 1935.

"A crew from Eltham Fire Station attended the scene.
