Button Insists McLaren Are Improving

Jenson Button says McLaren it is an exciting time to be at McLaren as they make "massive strides" forward each weekend.

The reunion with Honda has thus far been a disappointment, with neither Button nor team-mate Fernando Alonso scoring a point in the opening five races and reliability proving to be an issue.

However, Button thinks it is better to be at a team working from the back to the front than being stuck in the fight behind Mercedes and is sure the partnership will come good.

“I think it is belief from within,” Button told Sky Sports F1. "I’ve been with this team for six years and also having worked with Honda for so many years before that and seeing how passionate they are about motor racing and how they do everything to succeed in this sport, that is what gives you the belief that it is going to happen and it is going in the right direction

“But I also know it is not going to happen overnight. There are going to be a lot very busy weeks and months before we are able to challenge at the front.

“Everyone involved is loving the process right now. We are making progress every race, we are catching teams, overtaking teams then it is on to the next team in terms of our improvement rate.

“So it is not a bad place to be. I would rather be winning, of course, but if you can’t win you might as well be in our position which is a position that we are improving and making massive strides forward each race.”

The question remains, though: can McLaren and Honda turn it around in 2015?

“I don’t know and that is why it is exciting for everyone because we don’t know how long it is going to take,” said Button.

“We are just working flat out to make it happen sooner rather than later. That adds a bit to it really and you know what you are doing makes a difference.”
