Considering it's been a whole year since the last season of Love Island aired, it's safe to assume that dating show fans have been champing at the bit for new content. Fortunately The Cabins is here to fill the void – but does it live up to the OG?

The series, which kicked off on ITV2 tonight (January 4), sees hopeful singles have to shack up with prospective partners and decide each morning whether to "check out" or spend another night with one another.

Current couples include Sofia and Abraham, Olivia and Tom, and Sarah and Charlotte.

Judging by social media during the first episode, viewers at home seemed relatively pleased with the format, as they praised the fact that it's much more intimate, less looks-based and more "real" than its villa-set predecessor.

Even if those tuning in weren't completely enamoured with the episode as a whole, some were just pleased to see LGBTQ+ couples be included in the line-up – something that has almost never been the case with Love Island.

"That was really cute!! Nice to have a gay female couple just casually part of a dating show," one audience member said. "Can see me getting waaay too invested into this show! Perfect timing for Lockdown 3.0."

Another added: "Okay #TheCabins first ep wasn't that great but the fact that it's a dating show that has both straight and gay couples on it: I LIVE. Sarah & Char are both very cute."

"It's nice to see 2 girls dating on a reality show. That is very rare and something that should be encouraged more in shows like Love Island etc," a third tweeted.
