Chocoholics who are struggling to curb their sugar habit, we've got some great news. Next year, Cadbury will launch a new version of its iconic purple-wrapped Dairy Milk with 30% less sugar.

It's part of the confectionery giant's plan to tackle the obesity crisis, including childhood obesity, in the UK, and it's been in the making for two years.

It took a team of 20 scientists, nutritionists and chocolatiers to come up with a product containing less sugar with no artificial sweeteners, colours or preservatives and no increase in calories, the company said.

But fans of the original version, which happens to be the nation's favourite chocolate bar, shouldn't panic. Cadbury has assured customers that the low-sugar option will be sold alongside the standard product.

As for the taste? Glenn Caton, Mondelez International president for Northern Europe, said the recipe for the healthier chocolate was "trade secret" but he hinted that some of the sugar had been replaced with fibre.

"It tastes very, very close to the original but a little less sweet," Caton told Sky News. "It's been tested extensively on consumers and they love it."

The move comes after the government challenged the food industry to cut 20% of sugar from a range of products by 2020. In May, Public Health England reported that yoghurts and fromage frais, breakfast cereals, and sweet spreads and sauces have all met or exceeded the initial 5% sugar reduction ambition.

Dairy Milks aren't the only product to get a makeover. Cadbury has already introduced a 250 calorie cap on all small chocolate bars, and offers a Dairy Milk bar with 98 calories. It plans to introduce Wine Gums and Jelly Babies with 30% less sugar during 2019.
