Café serving 'proper' Cornish cream teas wins national award

A café serving "proper" Cornish cream teas has been honoured with a national award. The Garden Café, based at the Heritage Cottages in Newquay’s Trenance Gardens, focuses on Cornish favourites, serving up homemade scones and affordable light lunches.

The café has picked up a National Good Food award for the second year running - and it's the latest in a string of accolades. It recently won a Newquay in Bloom award for Best Café and is also in the running for the Best Café category in the Cornwall Tourism Awards.

The dog friendly venue is hugely popular with tourists but also holds a range of off-season events at Halloween and Christmas, complete with themed food and drink. It says its focus is on "Cornish favourites such as proper job Cornish Cream Teas with homemade scones as well as homemade cakes and light lunch affordable options with. a heritage theme".

Visitors who have reviewed the café on Tripadvisor have praised its cream teas as "amazing", with one saying its scones are "to die for". Other reviewers pointed to the "huge" portion size and called its strawberry jam "delicious".

Jane S, who visited this summer, wrote: "We sat outdoors overlooking the beautifully kept gardens. I had cream tea for one which included 2 large scones, delicious strawberry jam, clotted cream and a little fresh strawberry with a pot of tea. Scones are my 'thing' and I rate these homemade scones 10/10."

Charles Dosza said: "Great find. Went here as family for cream tea. Wonderful location with welcoming staff team. Cream teas were good quality and amazing portion size. Would definitely go again."

Mary Wilson said: "We popped in for a cream tea. Staff super friendly we had two scones which were a great size, lots of clotted cream and the jam was to die for. I could have just ate that."

And h0y13 commented: "The scones are to die for, whether plain or with currants, lovely sticky jam and a generous dollop of Cornish cream, coupled with a good pot of tea or a very smooth tasting coffee. It is an an absolute treasure of a place, and a must to sample."

The Good Food Awards aim to celebrate "top-notch food, service, and value" and are based on customer opinion, assessing venues using customer feedback and online reviews alongside nominations.
