A roadside cafe that had only recently reopened to diners has been completely destroyed in a fire. Firefighters tackled the blaze at K&R Cafe on a layby on the A522 between Tean and Uttoxeter, at around midnight last night.

The eatery had only welcomed back customers for the first time last month and offered an array of oatcakes, fry-ups and pies to eat in or take away. But the business has now shut until further notice.

Sharing the devastating news on Facebook, K&R Cafe said: "We have had a fire for those that don’t know and it has completely destroyed our business,

"We won’t be responding to messages for orders etc and I am about to set the business to closed until further notice. Thanks for all your kind messages of support."

The cause of the blaze has not yet been revealed. Diners were quick to share their sympathies.

One wrote: "So sorry this has happened. You were doing a wonderful job of building your business. Hopefully it won't be too long before you can rebuild and reopen if that's what you want to do."

Another added: "That poor place is doomed. Sorry to hear you are having such bad luck. Good luck in sorting things out."

And a third said: "This is terrible. You've both worked so hard to get the business to where it was, I can't express how sorry I feel for you both."
