It's official: Cagney's coming back to Casualty.

The BBC has confirmed that Cagney and Lacey star Sharon Gless will return to the soap as surgeon Zsa Zsa Harper-Jenkinson following her debut last year.

Tweeting the news, the official Casualty account wrote: "EXCITING NEWS! Zsa Zsa is back! @SharonGless will return as the sharp-witted Brain Surgeon later in the year. #Casualty."

As for Sharon herself, she also confirmed the news, adding: "Zsa Zsa is so happy to be back in town! Brain surgery anyone?"

And it's safe to say that fans were pretty delighted by the news too:

When she was first announced last year, Zsa Zsa was described as a "maestro of surgery", as well as being a former mentor to Dylan (William Beck).

"I play a brilliant brain surgeon named Zsa-Zsa, a wonderfully colourful character for a doctor," Sharon said at the time. "When they sent me the script I really liked her. She's a very famous brain surgeon so she doesn't have a nerve in her body."

She added: "The only two cast members I've worked with are Will (Beck) and Owen but that's a handful, we've had a good time the three of us. What has been the hardest part has been learning the medical terms, the big words.

"It's just been a wonderful experience. Some of the best shows we have in America are British and it's been an honour being in your hit medical show."

Casualty airs on BBC One.
