Californians who do not identify as male or female will soon be able to identify as a non-binary on state documents.

A bill titled the “Gender Recognition Act” has made it possible for state residents to choose from "male", "female" or “non-binary” on driving licences and birth certificates, the Sacramento Bee reported.

The measure, signed by California Democratic Governor Jerry Brown, will make it easier for people to change their gender on official documents.

Brown also signed a separate measure that allows people in prison to ask a court for a name or gender change.

The move was praised online as a step towards LGBTQ+ equality.
