Yahoo News Call the Midwife star teases "Dickensian" Christmas double bill
Call the Midwife actor Jenny Agutter has teased that this year's Christmas specials are going to be quite "Dickensian" in terms of their tone.
You read that right, the long-running BBC One drama is getting its first festive two-parter this year. It's set to be jam-packed, with an escaped prisoner on the loose, a mince pie competition, a Blue Peter scrap metal collection, and multiple types of flu going around.
That's quite a mix of light and dark, which isn't new for Call the Midwife, but Agutter — who plays Sister Julienne — believes that this time it's particularly reminiscent of the legendary novelist.

"For me, when I read it, I was very touched by it. It's quite Dickensian," she said at a press event (via Radio Times). "It is quite dark, but in with that is a lot of humour and a lot of humanity, and that's what lightens it.
"It's just the recognition that we're in difficult times, we've been in difficult times, we always were in difficult times. It just recognises that."
"I think it also feels really apt as a Christmas story to not just be full of joy and cheer, because life doesn't stop for Christmas," added Laura Main, who plays Shelagh Turner.

"Life can be difficult, and so that's reflected in the story. To take a moment to think of others, and see people serving others, is a nice message at Christmas."
In another first, this year's Christmas specials will end on a cliffhanger. Fans won't have to wait too long, however, as season 14 filming has been going at full speed (although bad weather did dampen the final week).
Call the Midwife airs on BBC One and streams on BBC iPlayer.
