A Camberwell flat and some shops went up in flames and an investigation has been launched as to the cause.. The London Fire Brigade (LFB) raced to the Camberwell end of Coldharbour Lane, SE5, at around 8.43am (this morning) after the blaze broke out in a flat above a row of shops.

Part of a two roomed flat on the third floor was burning. The LFB received 22 reports of the fire and mobilised six fire engines and around 40 firefighters from Peckham, Old Kent Road, New Cross and surrounding fire stations. The fire was under control by 10.29. A neighbour told MyLondon they were “scared” at how close the fire was to their home.

Part of Coldharbour Lane will be closed until this afternoon. If you need to head towards Denmark Hill or King’s College Hospital then you should go via Herne Hill or Camberwell New Road.

An LFB spokesperson said: “Six fire engines and around 40 firefighters tackled a fire at a range of shops and dwellings on Coldharbour Lane in Peckham. Part of a two roomed flat on the third floor was alight.

“Road closures are expected until this afternoon. One of the Brigade’s 32-metre turntable ladders was used at the scene as an observation tower to help fight the fire from above.

“Control Officers took the first of 22 calls at 8.43am and mobilised crews from Peckham, Old Kent Road, New Cross and surrounding fire stations to the scene. The fire was under control by 10.29am. The cause of the fire is under investigation.”

The Met Police has been contacted for comment.
