Cambridge hotel shares statement after building evacuated and road closed
Cambridge's University Arms Hotel has released a statement following an incident which saw the fire service called and the building evacuated on Thursday (October 24). Firefighters were called to the Regent Street building at 12.35pm with reports of a building fire.
The road was closed and a cordon was put in place. Motorists were diverted and bus services were cancelled or delayed as a result.
A spokesperson for the hotel said: "[The] University Arms hotel experienced an incident at the hotel earlier today. The cause of the alert was a fault in the staff service lift which triggered a full evacuation of the property.

"The fire brigade were called immediately to the scene to ensure the safety of guests and staff. The hotel and guests have been unaffected by this, nobody was injured – although the two hotel staff who first inspected the alarm were checked by ambulance teams. The hotel is now open again and fully functional."
Around 30 firefighters attended the scene, with the fire service saying the cause of the incident was 'accidental'. The road reopened at around 4pm.
