Acts including The Clash and Amy Winehouse are set to be remembered in a virtual music museum in Camden. The Music Walk of Fame will initially stretch along the road between the Roundhouse and Koko, with Madness and Prince among the first expected to be celebrated. It will feature paving stones similar to the Hollywood Walk of Fame.

Visitors will be able to see the stories behind the stars by accessing footage on a free app that will recognise the individual one-metre-square granite plaques.

Music journalist Dave Henderson, who is part of the group behind the scheme, said the area of north London was “a hotbed of music”, adding: “There are so many stories, Eric Clapton played with Muddy Waters at Dingwalls, Frank Zappa rehearsed at the Forum and Bob Marley lived in Camden when he first came to London.”

A test stone is due to be installed in February and the organisers eventually want more than 400 to be laid out over the next 20 years.

Documents prepared for Camden council, which has backed the scheme, estimate it could generate more than £1.7 million as a tourist attraction in the next two decades with events and concerts planned to mark unveilings.

A panel of industry insiders as well as fans will be asked to decide who should be recognised but early contenders include Queen and Coldplay.

Also under consideration will be notable non-performers who left their mark on the business, including Sex Pistols manager Malcolm McLaren and songwriter Bernie Taupin.

Some of the area’s venues such as the Electric Ballroom, which played host to The Clash, U2 and Public Enemy, could be included.

Jonathan Simpson, the council’s cabinet member for promoting culture and communities, said: “Camden has been the stomping ground for many well-known members of London’s creative communities. The international Walk of Fame project will highlight this.”
