Could professional photographers one day be out of a job – with computers capable of framing, retouching and selecting their own shots?

Google use an AI to create shots – using only StreetView data.

The artificial intelligence selected its own shots, by ‘roaming’ a landscape within Google street View – searching for the best composition.

The AI then applied various effects to make the shots look nicer – and they were good enough that professional photographers rated the results as ‘pro’ or ‘semi pro’.

In a blog post, Google says that the technology behind it could be used in future to help smartphone users create their own shots.

‘Our virtual photographer “travelled” 40,000 panoramas in areas like the Alps, Banff and Jasper National Parks in Canada, Big Sur in California and Yellowstone National Park, and returned with creations that are quite impressive, some even approaching professional quality – as judged by professional photographers.’
