Canada shooting: Woman killed and girl critically injured after at least 14 people shot in Toronto

A woman has died and a young girl is fighting for her life following a mass shooting in the Canadian city of Toronto.

Police confirmed that 14 people were injured in total before the gunman was killed in a shootout with officers.

One of those is a young girl whose condition was critical, following the shooting at about 10pm local time on Sunday (3am Monday UK time) in the downtown area of Greektown.

Witnesses said they saw a man dressed in black firing between 15 and 20 shots in the Danforth Avenue area.

One video taken from a nearby window appeared to show a man walking along the pavement with a gun before firing three shots into at least one shop or restaurant.

John Tulloch said he and his brother had just gotten out of their car when he heard about 20 to 30 gunshots.

"We just ran. We saw people starting to run so we just ran," he said.

An army of police, paramedics and other first responders soon descended on the scene, while residents, some in their pajamas, emerged from their homes to see what was happening.

Police Chief Mark Saunders said the shooting was not random and terrorism had not been ruled out.

Toronto Mayor John Tory told reporters: "It’s almost inconceivable that these things can happen... it’s a tragedy no matter which way you look at it.”

He said the attack was "evidence of a gun problem" in the city.

"We were so used to living in a city where these things didn't happen," Mr Tory said. "But there are things that happen nowadays and they are just unspeakable."

Ontario Premier Doug Ford tweeted: "My heart goes out to the victims and loved ones of the horrific act of gun violence in Toronto.

"Thank you to all the first responders for acting quickly to help everyone affected."

Toronto's Greektown is a lively residential area with crowded Greek restaurants and cafes.
