Canada's Trudeau says fighting for every vote

Back in 2015 when Justin Trudeau was voted in as Canada's new prime minister...he had this to say

MONTREAL, QUEBEC, CANADA (FILE - OCTOBER 20, 2015) (SOUNDBITE) (English) JUSTIN TRUDEAU, CANADA'S LIBERAL PARTY LEADER, SAYING: "Canadians from all across this great country sent a clear message tonight -- it's time for a change in this country, my friends, a real change."

Now- four years later as Trudeau seeks re-election, he is hoping Canadians are not looking for change.

Ahead of the election on Monday - polls show Trudeau's Liberals locked in a tie with the opposition Conservatives and may not capture enough seats for a majority.

The 47-year old said on Friday - he was fighting for every vote...

The election comes at a time when a series of scandals have tarnished Trudeau's image

Just last month, he made international headlines when a photo emerged showing a 29-year-old Trudeau at an Arabian Nights-themed party, his face covered in dark makeup, evoking racial stereotypes that seemed contrary to everything he stood for.

He apologized profusely in ensuing weeks..

(SOUNDBITE) (English) CANADIAN PRIME MINISTER JUSTIN TRUDEAU, SAYING: "Darkening your face, regardless of the context or the circumstances, is always unacceptable because of the racist history of blackface. I should have understood that then. And I never should have done it."

The blackface incident came on the heels Of another scandal - revelations from the Office of Canada's Independent Ethics Commissioner that Trudeau's team had breached ethics rules by helping construction firm SNC-Lavalin Group avoid a criminal trial.

(SOUNDBITE) (English) CANADIAN PRIME MINISTER JUSTIN TRUDEAU, SAYING: "As I said, I take full responsibility, the buck stops with the prime minister, and I assume responsibility for everything that happened in my office.".

The episodes giving conservatives a lot to work with...During a debate last week. Trudeau's rival Andrew Shceer called him "a phony and a fraud" who did not deserve to govern.

Scheer has repeatedly said Trudeau will raise taxes immediately after the election - which Trudeau has denied

Meanwhile, the Liberals are citing near-record low jobless numbers, booming growth and lower levels of poverty as grounds for a possible win next week.

Trudeau may also have history on his side.

Not since 1935 has a Canadian prime minister who won a parliamentary majority in his first term been booted from office in the next election.

And just this past Wednesday Trudeau won the endorsement of former U.S. President Barack Obama who tweeted: "I was proud to work with Justin Trudeau as President. He's a hard-working, effective leader who takes on big issues like climate change. The world needs his progressive leadership now, and I hope our neighbors to the north support him for another term."
