Cape Town Shack Settlement Reduced to Ashes in Wildfire

Thousands of residents of an informal settlement in Hout Bay, on the southern fringe of Cape Town, were left homeless after a wildfire ripped through the area over the weekend.

Several people were killed and 15,000 displaced in the blaze at Imizamo Yethu that started early on Saturday, March 11, according to local media.

Footage captured by a volunteer handing out water, food and other aid to those affected captured the devastation left behind by the fire on Sunday. Credit: Facebook/Ryno Engelbrecht via Storyful
