Capri picnic spots: Nina Parker's guide to the most picturesque points on the island
Over the years Capri has become a glamorous summer playground for royalty and movie stars alike. Grace Kelly and Princess Margaret both holidayed there, as did Elizabeth Taylor and Rita Hayworth.
Much like the classic Italian island, which never goes out of style, Sanpellegrino’s new Classic Italian Taste range reflects the timeless feel of summers spent of Italy, with indulgent citrus flavours that evoke long, lazy days on the beach and warm Mediterranean evenings.
If you’re visiting Capri (or just want some Italian al fresco dining ideas) I’ve rounded up some of my favourite spots on the island where you can stop and enjoy the views - from a fresh watermelon picnic on the Marina Piccola to a walk along via Pizzolungo, with its beautiful views of the famous Faraglioni.
Perhaps my favourite beach on the island which overlooks the iconic Faraglioni rocks. You can easily catch a bus from the town centre down to the Marina Piccola and once you have walk passed the little rocky archway you stumble upon the pebbled beach. This makes for an excellent picnic stop but you must come early to grab a good place as it gets busy.
Eat: A slice of watermelon from the little shop by the beach.
Picnic on a boat
I met Julia Brun a few years back when I was writing my Capri cookbook. She has a romantic Capri story where she came for summer holidays from Germany aged 19, met an Italian man and they fell in love. Since then she has made Capri her home. Julia and her husband run a boat renting business and you can either rent or get someone to charter a vessel for you.
Eat: Ciabatta spread with ricotta and capers.
Spiaggia de Cala Grande
Located about 5 minutes walk from Marina Grande, this little sandy beach is great for a pit-stop lunch and a last sunbathe before you have to head home on the ferry.
Eat: Caprese salad with tomatoes, basil and mozzarella.
Whenever I think about this walk from the town centre down to the Arco Naturale or the Fontelina beach, it makes me happy. It brings back amazing memories of walking up and down Capri’s stunning rocky landscape. Depending on where you start the walk, it can take up to an hour in the blazing heat, so midway is the opportune moment for a picnic stop-off with a chilled drink. There are many great vista points along the way, but nothing beats a view of the Faraglioni while at the same time checking out some of Capri’s hidden private villas.
Eat: Cannoli from one of the pastries in town.
