We all know Marvel fans love to do a bit of digging – that's what made some of Endgame's many fan-service moments so special.

Sometimes that investigative work goes quite far, leading to some pretty wild fan theories.

Since the release of Captain Marvel, some fans have been doubting the authenticity of one Nick Fury, thanks to a scene in Age of Ultron involving some bread.

To break it down, in Captain Marvel, Fury convinces Carol Danvers he's not a Skrull by saying: "If toast is cut diagonally, I can't eat it."

But in Age of Ultron (which is set long after Captain Marvel but released four years earlier), some fans spotted Fury eating a diagonally-cut sandwich.

So was Fury replaced by a Skrull at some point between the two movies? Well, Captain Marvel's directors Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck don't seem too convinced.

"There are two options here. Either Fury became a Skrull, or he got over his weird fear of diagonally cut toast, and we'll never know the truth," Boden told Entertainment Tonight.

"He actually became okay with people calling him Nick. So, you know, either he's a Skrull or he just changed, like we all do," Fleck added.

As for their thoughts on Marvel fans picking apart every detail in the movies, Boden and Fleck understand it comes with the territory.

"I guess you always kind of expect that that's going to happen, and the folks at Marvel, who've had a lot more experience with this than we have, they did warn us that on every single movie they discover something about their own universe," Boden said.

"But really, isn't that the beauty about this kind of an art form? Is that it's about more than the filmmakers' intentions," she added.

"It's always about what it becomes after it's part of the public."

Avengers: Endgame is out in cinemas now.
