Speaking to the Record, Anthony Rea explained how the fire led to traffic quickly building up in the area.
He said: "We were heading over the Kingston Bridge and noticed the smoke at first. Once we got closer you could see the flames.
"The van was well alight and the traffic was starting to build up behind it.
"The emergency services weren't on the scene yet so nobody was driving past the vehicle. Hopefully the driver got out in time because the flames had completely engulfed the van."
Traffic Scotland posted on X warning road users of delays of up to half an hour.
A spokesperson said: "Junction 1 to Seaward Street (NB). Road CLOSED due to a vehicle fire. Road users are advised to find alternative routes. Fire service remain at the scene."
A Scottish Fire and Rescue Service spokesperson said: “We were alerted at 1.24pm on Tuesday, October 29 to reports of a van on fire at the M74 junction 1A northbound.
“Operations Control mobilised three fire appliances and firefighters extinguished a fire affecting one van.
