A block of flats is being assessed after images showed a car crashing right through the building. The incident happened on Tuesday afternoon in Gaer Road in Newport.

Footage from the scene appeared to show a blue car having crashed through part of one of the flats in the road near the old Bonsai Chinese Takeaway. In front of the Gaer shops another cream-coloured car looks to have been severely damaged with its rear end crumpled and items hanging out of the boot.

A fire engine could be seen at the scene with fire crews appearing to be examining the building and people crowded around. For the latest Welsh news delivered to your inbox sign up to our newsletter.

Newport City Council said on Tuesday night that its structural engineers and Newport City Homes (NCH) were assessing the block of flats after a vehicle collided with the building. It said NCH, the local housing association, was at the site to assist affected residents and would provide temporary accommodation.

The cause of the crash is unclear. A spokesman for South Wales Fire and Rescue Service said they attended a road traffic collision in the area at around 2.30pm on Tuesday, June 11, but was unable to provide further details.

A Newport City Council statement said: "Structural engineers from NCC and Newport City Homes (NCH) are assessing a block of flats in the Gaer after a vehicle collided with the building. NCH is on site to assist affected residents and will provide temporary accommodation. We are working together to address any needs."
