Car destroyed by large fire amid 'explosions' in Chard car park

A car has been destroyed by fire after catching alight and being engulfed in flames amid explosions in a car park in Somerset today, Thursday, January 30. Fire crews were called to the scene of a large fire involving a car in Crowshute car park in Chard at 2.40pm.

As fire crews arrived at the scene, they found a car that was "well alight", but was not near any other vehicles so damage was limited. Crews worked to extinguish the blaze and a cordon was put in the area for the safety of the public.

Footage taken at the scene shows flames engulf the vehicle as thick black smoke filled the sky. One witness said they even heard explosions at the scene. They said: "Crowshute Carpark, Chard just now. Car fire. Explosions".

The car has been severely damaged by the fire, but it is not thought that anyone suffered any injuries. The cause of the fire is believed to be accidental.

A spokesperson for Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue Service has said: "We were called at 2.40pm and sent two appliances. The car was well alight on our arrival but there were no other vehicles nearby. Crews used breathing apparatus and water and foam jets to extinguish the fire.

"The area was cordoned off. The car was severely damaged by fire. Accidental cause."
