Caracas Protesters Flee as Police Fire Tear Gas

Venezuelan anti-government protesters and opposition leaders marching to the Ministry of Health to demand “health and life” on May 22 began to flee as Venezuelan security forces fired tear gas on Caracas’ Francisco Farjado highway.

This latest day of protest marks over 50 days of ongoing demonstrations against President Nicolas Maduro as the country faces an extreme economic crisis. Tensions have been further heightened by at least 48 deaths related to the protests. Venezuela’s opposition blame the deaths on what they say are unnecessarily violent protest repression tactics used by the Venezuelan National Guard and police, under Maduro’s direction.
