Cardi B pleads not guilty to assault charges after fight in New York strip club

Cardi B has appeared in court to face new charges over her alleged involvement in a fight at a New York City strip club.

The Grammy Award-winning rapper, whose real name is Belcalis Almanzar, pleaded not guilty to attempted assault and various lesser charges over the incident.

The artist, from the Bronx, did not speak to reporters as she entered and left the courthouse, but waved at a small crowd of fans who shouted her name and took video on their mobile phones.

Prosecutors say a fight broke out in which chairs, bottles and hookah pipes were thrown, causing minor injuries to the woman and another employee.

Cardi B wore a blue and pink pant suit and carried a pink handbag as she was escorted into the New York Supreme Court on Tuesday.

"Free Cardi B," one fan shouted, as the singer known for chart-topping hits "Bodak Yellow" and "I like it" waved to supporters.

The rapper surrendered to New York City police last October after a complaint claimed she was involved in the fight.

She told fans near the end of her sold-out concert on Saturday night at Los Angeles Staples Center: "I ain’t going to jail, I got a daughter."

She entered a plea of not guilty to assault charges at the hearing.

Cardi B had originally only been charged with misdemeanours. Prosecutors presented the case to a grand jury after she rejected a plea deal that would have given her a conditional discharge.

Two other defendants in the case who allegedly participated in the brawl also pleaded not guilty to similar charges.

The judge set September 9 as the next court date, but the rapper does not have to appear.
