Cardiff riots: 20 people arrested in connection with disorder after fatal crash in Ely

Police investigating riots in Cardiff in the aftermath of a crash which killed two people have confirmed 20 people have been arrested in connection with the disorder.

The events unfolded on the evening of 22 May in the hours after a fatal crash in the Ely area in which best friends Kyrees Sullivan, 16, and Harvey Evans, 15, died.

South Wales Police had previously confirmed they had arrested nine people in connection with the disorder but now say the number has reached 20.

17 males and three females aged between 14 and 36 have been arrested on suspicion of riot and have been released on police bail while the investigation continues.

Officers investigating the crash said it happened on Snowden Road at 6.02pm and an electric bicycle was recovered from the scene.

CCTV footage showed a police vehicle following two boys on a bike minutes before the crash.

The force has referred itself to the Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC) to ensure the circumstances leading up to the collision are independently scrutinised.

Kyrees and Harvey's families continue to be supported by family liaison officers, police said.

Police confirmed on social media at 11.15pm on the day that the collision had already occurred before they arrived at the scene and that officers were still trying to "manage a large scale disorder".

Detective Chief Superintendent Ceri Hughes said "residents were scared in their homes" that evening.

"During the disorder several vehicles were set alight, property was damaged, police officers were injured, and residents were scared in their homes," he said.
