Care for Kids North Devon has successfully completed its latest transformation project at Caroline Thorpe children’s ward (NDDH).

The charity has refurbished Cubicle 2 (an individual bedroom on the ward) making it a more comfortable place to stay for children who need to spend longer periods of time in hospital.

As well as the whole room being specially lined and painted, there’s a new wall mounted TV, games console and digital art on the walls with a sunflower theme. A new chair bed is also making things more comfortable for parents who sleep over, allowing them to stay close to their child all night. These investments will help make stays on the Caroline Thorpe children’s ward a more positive and comfortable experience for local children and their families.

Charity Founder and Trustee, Jacky Massos says: “This is the fourth cubicle we have transformed at the children’s ward and it’s looking so bright and pretty. Having already refurbished the playroom and parent’s room, we’ve been working on gradually upgrading all of the individual bedrooms on the ward.

“Having a comfortable environment when you’re poorly is really important, especially for children. A big thank you to Tesco and customers at the Braunton and Ilfracombe stores, who voted for us to receive £2,000 from the Tesco Community Fund. Also, to North Devon Council for the £700 councillor grant towards the project.”

Gemma Hayes, Caroline Thorpe ward manager, says: “It's so important to be able to enhance our spaces, especially for our long-term patients who spend a lot of time on the ward. We treat patients of all ages up to 18, and it isn't easy making the space suitable for everyone, but Care for Kids has done it again. Enhancing our rooms also has a really positive impact on our staff, as the rooms are so much brighter and fresher. It's fantastic.”

As well as carrying out enhancements to the children’s ward at North Devon District Hospital, Care for Kids North Devon also gives financial support to families who have a child diagnosed with a life-threatening illness.
