Holidaymakers heading to a Caribbean island are being warned of an issue which could 'last for several hours'. Power cuts have been affecting parts of St Maarten in recent weeks.

Areas across the island have seen power shortages which have lasted for several hours. The 'frequent' power outages have also been impacting shops, banks and hotels, the Foreign Office said.

Tourists heading to St Maarten - which is a popular cruise port destination - are now being warned to prepare for the ongoing power cuts. The Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office (FCDO) updated its guidance for tourists heading to St Maarten on Thursday, June 13.

It said: "St Maarten has been experiencing ongoing power cuts in recent weeks. These are frequent and can last for several hours, impacting shops, banks, hotels, and other infrastructure.

"Ensure that you are prepared for power cuts by charging phones, writing down key phone numbers, and ensuring you have a sufficient supply of food and water. During power cuts follow the advice of local authorities."
