Corinthians have already started searching for a replacement goalkeeper amid Nottingham Forest’s reported interest in Carlos Miguel.

A reshuffle between the posts is on the cards for the Reds this summer as they look to push on in the Premier League next season. They have been heavily linked with 25-year-old Miguel, who is said to have a 4 million euros (£3.4m) release clause in his contract.

Reports in the Brazilian media in recent days suggested Forest had a verbal agreement with Miguel in place and were favourites to sign him on a five-year deal. Corinthians president Augusto Melo said in a press conference on Monday that the release clause had not yet been activated, but added contingency plans were being worked on to cover for the player’s potential departure.

“We are already talking to other goalkeepers, a scout is being carried out,” Melo told ESPN in a translated interview. “This new management is always thinking about the future, we are not kidding here.”

The recent sale of former No.1 Cassio paved the way for Miguel to get an opportunity in the Corinthians team. But it could leave the Brazilian outfit with a problem to solve, if there is another keeper departure.

“Cassio, we weren't the ones who released him, he wanted to leave,” Melo added. “We don't want people in here who don't want to stay. Everyone has the right to leave.

“We want people who want to stay and play for Corinthians, who want to take over this institution. This reformulation was necessary. No one has ever had the courage to do that.”

Reports have suggested Miguel previously had a 50m euros (£42m) release clause in his contract, only for a significant change to the amount to be made earlier this year. It seems the alteration put clubs on alert, with West Ham United, Watford and other teams in Europe said to be interested. However, Corinthians are said to be still trying to convince the player to stay put.

“So far, nothing has arrived for me. No contract, no fines (release clauses) have been paid. Boy is there, happy working,” Melo said. “We had information from Carlos Miguel, we talked about the renewal, we waited for the definition, we were reassured that everything would be OK. There wasn't much to do.

“There is no way you can hire an athlete and reduce his percentage. Why was there a fine (release clause) of 50 million euros until December 31st and from January 1st a fine (release clause) of 4 million euros?

“We are hostages, there is nothing we can do. If the athlete and the businessman do not want to renew. Nothing came to us, they didn't pay the fine (release clause). Yes, there is talk, a noise that they are going to pay the fine (release clause) and that he is going to leave.

“He is training, he is a Corinthians athlete, he depends on the commission. We made a renewal proposal, we are already working in this direction, the athlete interests us and we would not like to lose him. Unfortunately, the way this contract was created scares us.”

Over the weekend, Globo reported that the “prospect” of being a starter for the Reds was a significant lure for Miguel. He was said to have “his career project” in mind when making decisions about his future.

However, he previously stated he was happy to be at Corinthians. The Hammers and Fulham were linked with Miguel earlier this year, but at the time he played down the chances of a move.

“About leaving, having offers to leave, it has a lot to do with the heart, because I chose to be here,” he told ESPN last month. “I could have gone to other clubs when I arrived at the beginning. I didn’t come because of the money, I came because I knew what it was like here, the work I would have here.

“I'm happy to be here today and do everything I dreamed of. I prefer to continue maintaining it. In life nothing is easy, sometimes we have some barriers and we need to overcome them by facing them.”
