Carol Vorderman has called out online trolls who say she is too old to show off her body on social media.

The TV star, 61, responded to "anyone who says you shouldn't do 'this or that' at a certain age", and insisted she is "fit and happy" despite the criticism.

In a post on Instagram, the former Countdown presenter shared a video of herself learning how to do the splits while doing yoga during the summer.

She joked in the caption of the video - in which she wears a red gym kit set while stretching out on a mat - that it was her "happy bird who’s not giving in to a number" routine.

Vorderman wrote: "To anyone who says you shouldn't do 'this or that' at a certain age...and is still living in the 20th or even 19th century.

"Please bear this in mind when you’re attempting to troll any woman no matter what their age...

"I love my life. I’m alive and fit and happy.....but do you know the strongest bit of my body now?

"It’s my middle finger.....and I use that middle finger without apology....so a word from the wise.

"Calm down and smile and join the happy crowd. It’s a much nicer place to be."

Her post, which has received more than 11,000 'likes, was praised by fans who said they found her message for older women inspiring.

One person commented "well [sic] said Carol and you look amazing", while another shared "good [sic] on you girl".

Famous friends, including Josie Gibson and Denise Welch, were among those to leave flame emojis.
