Carol Vorderman shared some tragic news this Mother's Day: her mother Jean has been diagnosed with terminal cancer.

The former Countdown presenter made the announcement on social media yesterday morning (March 26), telling her many followers that the day was "precious" following Jean's diagnosis.

"A precious Mother's Day," said Carol. "This week Mum & I found out she has terminal cancer.

"She's 88, beautiful inside and out & I love her beyond measure."

Jean – who has already beaten cancer three times – was rushed to the Bristol Royal Infirmary the previous weekend, suffering from intense pain.

She then underwent several tests which revealed she has multiple tumours, before being told the devastating news that her condition is not curable.

"At my age I don't want to undergo any further operations or chemotherapy treatment which can't cure these new cancers anyway," Jean told The Mirror.

"Now my family and me will concentrate on being happy and celebrating the time we have together. I'm refusing to let them be sad."

The matriarch will be cared for by her children, including Carol, at her home in Bristol.

"I love her beyond measure," added Carol.

"We are laughing so much and she is having a lovely time. She refuses to let us be sad so we are taking our lead from her."

Later on in the day, Carol shared a candid snap of the family enjoying a Mother's Day lunch, full of "lots of laughing".

"Mum's lunch with all her children, all her grandchildren and her gorgeous great grandchild Alex," Carol wrote on Twitter.
