Jim Carrey has gone all scandi-noir in the first trailer for eerie new thriller Dark Crimes.

The actor is a million miles away from his comedic roots as he plays a cop trying to solve an unsolved murder that bares similarity to a crime described in a book.

The chief suspect is its author Krystov Kozlow (Marton Csokas), though Carrey's beardy cop Tadek gets increasingly obsessed with the crime and drawn into a dark underworld of sex and lies.

Dark Crimes also stars Charlotte Gainsbourg, though it is not a brand new movie as such, having first premiered towards the end of 2016.

Carrey recently starred in Netflix documentary Jim & Andy: The Great Beyond about his portrayal of Andy Kaufman on Man on the Moon, which had its fair share of bizarre moments.

Speaking of bizarre, last year Carrey gave an interview at New York Fashion Week that got very, very existential, the star calling the whole event he was attending "meaningless".

"I don't believe in icons, I don't believe in personalities," he said. "I believe that peace lies beyond personalities, beyond invention and disguise, beyond the red 'S' you wear on your chest, that makes bullets bounce off."

He also talked about "tetrahedrons" and argued that "this is not our world, we don't matter".

Yes, looking back at it half a year later, it's still as weird as ever. We think murder mystery Carrey makes more sense.

Dark Crimes is due to be released on May 11 in the US.
