Carrie Fisher brother wants Leia in Star Wars Episode 9

Carrie Fisher's brother Todd isn't yet giving up hope of General Leia in Star Wars: Episode IX in spite of the actress's tragic death of a few years ago.

Lucasfilm has previously ruled out the possibility of digitally recreating Carrie Fisher for the final instalment in the Skywalker Saga, much like it did for Rogue One: A Star Wars Story.

Still, her brother Todd points to the surprise cameo of classic character Yoda in The Last Jedi as hope that the Star Wars could change its mind about writing out the General Leia character.

"Yoda came back in the last movie, so why not Carrie?" Todd told Variety. "In the first film, Obi-Wan says that if he dies, he'll come back stronger than ever. I feel like that's Carrie. She'll never disappear entirely."

Mark Hamill previously confirmed that Leia had been meant to be more "prominent" in Episode IX than in The Last Jedi, forcing the writing team to basically re-conceive the film following Carrie Fisher's death in 2016.

A recently-released tie-in has seemingly offered some clues about how Leia's fate could be revealed off-screen in Episode IX, and a rumoured time jump might also be helpful in resolving loose ends.

On the non-Leia front, Lucasfilm has confirmed that it has "multiple" Star Wars movies in the works aside from Episode IX, despite reports that it was shelving its Star Wars Story anthology series.

Star Wars: Episode IX, to be directed by The Force Awakens' JJ Abrams, will be released on December 20, 2019.
