The familiar beep of a Lidl Plus code being scanned at the tills is one most regular customers recognise.

While the digital scratchcards are fun to play one of the most rewarding features of Lidl Plus is Coupon Plus where customers earn coupons when you reach certain spend targets.

After Lidl made some changes to Coupon Plus earlier this year you now get a free bakery item when you spend £10 and a free fruit item when your total reaches £50. The current coupons, which change every few months, include a free pack of Milbona Cheese when you spend £100, free frozen potatoes when you spend £150 and a 10% off voucher when you spend reaches £250 in a month.

When I spotted my spend had recently passed £50 I was intrigued to find out which pieces of fruit were included.

Scrolling through the list of included items I was pleasantly surprised to see that Lidl stays true to the strict definition of a 'fruit' with the likes of tomatoes and chillies among the many freebies which customers can choose from.

Determined to make the most of my coupon I looked to find the most expensive item on the list. Some fruit is notoriously dear - like cherries and raspberries - no doubt more expensive due to the need for them to be hand-picked.

The range of fruit on the list of included items is extensive and I was instantly drawn to what was named as a "grocers case". When I visited my local Lidl this week I asked a store assistant what a grocers case, telling him that I hoped "it was, like, a huge case of fruit".

While the Lidl employee laughed at my cheek I certainly wasn't disappointed when he took me down the fruit aisle to show what a grocers case is. And it's easily one of the most expensive items you can get using this coupon.

Because, having spent £10 on other items, the free piece of fruit coupon includes a crate of easy peeler oranges which normally retail at £3.89. I didn't hesitate in adding a case to my trolley and the chap at the till agreed with me when I said "you might as well get the most expensive item for free".

The case contained 25 easy peeler oranges in perfectly ripe condition. Definitely one to opt for when you're next looking to cash in your 'free piece of fruit' coupon.
