Manchester United midfielder Casemiro had an afternoon to forget at Old Trafford on Sunday, as the club fell to defeat against rivals Liverpool.

The Brazilian was named in the starting XI for the game but was replaced by 20-year-old Toby Collyer at the break. Both of Luis Diaz’s first-half goals came from mistakes from Casemiro, with the midfielder seemingly struggling with the pace of the game.

The signing of Manuel Ugarte on deadline day will likely see the 32-year-old replaced in the line-up this season. Ugarte wasn’t eligible for the game against Liverpool due to not being registered in time.

Casemiro was linked with a move away from Old Trafford during the summer transfer window but stayed at the club. His struggles against Liverpool have led to a look at the finances involved in keeping the midfielder at the club.

Casemiro is one of the highest earners in the United squad. At the time of his signing, The Athletic reported that his salary was on a similar level to that of David De Gea who has since left the club.

The Spanish goalkeeper was reported to earn above £350,000-a-week, with Casemiro reported to be a similar wage. It is, however, said that his deal was heavily incentivised and performance-related, and his salary would drop significantly if United weren’t playing Champions League football, which has been the case.

Casemiro has two years remaining on the contract that he signed when he joined the club from Real Madrid in 2022. United also have the option to extend the deal for a further year.

The club paid a fee of €60 million (£50.5m), potentially rising to €70 million (£58.95m) to Real Madrid for his services. At the time, he was one of the highest earners at the Spanish club and is said to have been promised a ‘modest uplift’ if United qualified for the Champions League. That goal not being achieved leaves some slight doubts over the sort of wage that the midfielder is getting.
