Modern Family has just completed production on the eighth series of the hit sitcom, where we'll see Manny and Luke graduating from high school.

But if negotiations don't run smoothly, it looks like some fellow characters could find themselves graduating from the five-time Best Comedy Series Emmy winner – because six of its biggest cast members are yet to renew their contracts for series nine.

Sofia Vergara (Gloria), Julie Bowen (Claire), Ty Burrell (Phil), Eric Stonestreet (Cameron), Jesse Tyler Ferguson (Mitchell) and Ed O'Neill (Jay) have thrown a pay spanner into the works after their latest contracts ran out – and they are reportedly wanting 'significant' increases on their $350,000 (£285,215) per episode current fee.

Deadline references ongoing talks between the show's network ABC and studio 20th Century Television to try to secure the big-name actors for a next series – and for the sake of everyone let's hope that things can get ironed out.

There is a chance that things could get a little bit messy if arrangements don't go the actors' way, seeing as they have previously taken the studio court in order to make sure they got the deal they wanted.

But it seems that despite possible tricky negotiations, the different sides involved seem to think that at least one series renewal is likely, according to Deadline.

We'll know more for sure when talks are planned to wrap up in May.
