Castleford Tigers chase Parramatta Eels halfback in significant recruitment move
Castleford Tigers have set their sights on Parramatta Eels halfback Daejarn Asi. Rugby League Live can reveal that Tigers have spoken to Asi's management about a move to Super League next year, with the playmaker keen to explore options in the UK.
Asi, 24, was offered to Super League clubs last month and the Tigers are thought to have launched a move with a view to securing his services for 2025. Asi has made 39 appearances in the competition for North Queensland Cowboys, New Zealand Warriors and most recently, the Eels.
Craig Lingard recently confirmed the club would be looking for a new playmaker to provide further competition for places and Asi has now emerged as a key target to fill that role in the squad.
A deal isn't yet done but with Asi keen to pursue a move to Super League, the Tigers are confident of securing what would be a key piece of recruitment for 2025.
Asi has played 14 times for the Eels this season, scoring three tries and providing four assists. The half-back has also played in both the Queensland and New South Wales Cups, first turning out for Townsville Blackhawks in 2019. He has also played for Parramatta's NSW Cup side over the last two years.
On the international stage, Asi has represented Samoa, earning two caps for the Pacific Island nation in 2023. He has also played for the Māori All-Stars.
Speaking about his future earlier this year, Asi said: "I'm just looking for the best opportunity to play footy. I'm not too sure yet, but we'll weigh up the options at the end of the season."
He is likely to take a quota spot that will be vacated by Elie El-Zakhem, who is expected to return home at the end of the season.
