Casualty's Charlie Fairhead is set to return to work earlier than expected following the recent death of his wife, as the BBC soap gears up to explore his grief in a new storyline.

In scenes scheduled to air this weekend, the character – played by actor Derek Thompson – shocks his colleagues when he turns up to work at Holby City Hospital's emergency department and asks that he be given no special treatment after Duffy's passing earlier this month.

Explaining that he wants to get back into the swing of things, emergency nurse practitioner Charlie throws himself back into his work but he's taken aback when he realises just how much Jacob (Charles Venn) has changed in the ED since he's been away.

Charlie becomes increasingly irritated at work, despite the team's best efforts to keep him in high spirits.

His mental state is tested too when his friend Henry is brought into the ED, having injured himself at his butcher shop, and Charlie has to open up about Duffy's death when Henry asks why the couple haven't popped by in recent weeks, accusing them of having no loyalty to his local business.

At first, Henry is sympathetic but he later lashes out at his old friend following an unexpected Parkinson's diagnosis. He hits Charlie where it hurts by stating that he won't be taking medical advice from a man who couldn't even manage to save his own partner.

Although Henry later apologises for his words after his pregnant daughter is injured at the shop too, the damage has already been done and Charlie's pain and grief is reignited.

After Charlie loses patiences with Jacob too, he's left wondering how he's going to manage at the ever-changing ED without Duffy.

Casualty airs these scenes on Saturday, February 29.
