Casualty star George Rainsford has teased what's ahead for Ethan Hardy in the aftermath of tonight's harrowing episode (August 17).

Ethan had a terrifying brush with death in Saturday's scenes, when a bomb went off while he was trying to treat an injured patient called Jenny.

Jenny and her dad Andy had become trapped after a lorry was purposely driven into a market in a suspected terror attack.

As Ethan frantically tried to aid the injured, he was left in an impossible dilemma when a second threat – a bomb – was identified on site, but ultimately refused to leave Jenny alone.

Tragically, both Jenny and firefighter Al lost their lives in the explosion, leaving Ethan utterly traumatised in the aftermath.

Speaking to Digital Spy, George – who plays him – said: "Ethan is in a state of shock and can’t process exactly what’s happened.

"Going forward, there’s certainly repercussions. Because it’s Ethan, he thinks the best way to deal with it is to keep busy.

"After this, he throws himself into work, and he tries to help, and he tries to distract himself like that.

"There’s some stuff that picks up in the following episode which becomes his main focus. I think for him it’s almost like a project that can stop him thinking about all the awful things that have happened in his life, including this major episode."

Discussing whether this could send Ethan down a dark road again, George said: "He went through a dark period. There were shards of light with Alicia, and that went wrong again.

"Ethan, fundamentally, is quite a chipper, empathetic, caring, kind person, but has had lots of woes as well.

"Most of the people he’s kind of got close to have either died or left. Which is quite a depressing thought. He’s had a lot to deal with."

Casualty continues on Saturday, August 24 on BBC One.
