Casualty taken to hospital after incident on line near Durham railway station

A casualty was rushed to University Hospital of North Durham following an incident on the railway track near the city's station.

The emergency services were called to reports of a person on the tracks near to Durham station at 7.12am on Monday. One person was taken to hospital at University Hospital of North Durham having suffered injuries "not believed to be life-changing or life-threatening", British Transport Police said.

Earlier National Rail updates suggested a "person had been hit by a train", and this was the reason for substantial delays to a number of rush-hour trains on the East Coast Main Line.

In a statement, a BTP spokesperson said: "Officers were called to lines near Durham railway station at 7.12am today (20 January) to reports of a casualty on the tracks.

"Paramedics also attended and a person was taken to hospital with injuries not believed to be life changing or life threatening. The incident is not being treated as suspicious."

A North East Ambulance Service spokesperso added: "We were called to an incident on the railway line near Durham train station shortly before 7.15 this morning. We dispatched two vehicles from our Hazardous Area Response Team, a specialist paramedic, a duty officer and a double crewed ambulance. One patient was taken to University Hospital of North Durham."
