Casualty has won a prestigious Rose d'Or award, fending off strong competition from fellow BBC soap EastEnders.

Earlier this month, it was confirmed that the two shows would be going head-to-head in the Soap or Telenovela category of the international entertainment and broadcasting awards, competing against other shows from around the globe.

Yesterday (November 28), the winners were announced, with Casualty taking home the trophy for the category.

Reacting to the win, star Jason Durr (David Hide) shared pictures of himself with the trophy, tweeting: "Winner winner Rosed'or dinner! So delighted that Nurse David Hide' s storyline on Casualty has won a prestigious Rose d'Or award."

Durr's character has been at the centre of a dramatic storyline this year amid son Ollie's death after the teenager set out to carry a mass school shooting with his friend Rob.

The actor confirmed last month that he will be exiting after six years on the soap, saying at the time: "After 6 yrs playing the wonderfully complex Nurse David Hide, I've hung up my scrubs."

He added: "I've forged firm friendships, learnt to pronounce Uvulopalatopharyngoplasty and had my squeamishness thoroughly challenged! Here's to new adventures (hopefully with less blood and guts)."

As well as a win for Casualty, the Rose d'Or awards gave gongs to the likes of Heartstopper's Yasmin Finney (Emerging Talent Award) and Succession's Brian Cox (Lifetime Achievement Award).

"The Rose d'Or 2022 has given us new stories, situations and creative approaches to delight and inform audience around the world," said Mark Rowland, chair of the jury.

"It has come down to a fantastic group of nominees and to these worthy winners. Huge congratulations to them all. For anyone who hasn't watched these shows yet, you have a treat in store!"

Casualty airs on Saturdays on BBC One and streams on BBC iPlayer.
